It's Great to Be Back!

After the easing of the full lockdown on 17th May, our first Church Service that we were allowed to ring for was scheduled for 13th June.  All 7 members turned up and we rang some good Rounds, Queens and Titums.

It was great to ring as a team for Sunday service again and to see the congregation back in Church, and of course to hear the bells again was fantastic after such a long time.

We are currently holding a variable weekly practice, this week we are going to practice on Tuesday (15th June) at 8pm, so please listen out for us!

Our next Sunday service ringing will be next month, times will be published when available.

Enjoy The Euros Safely

Tomorrow sees the start of the long overdue Euro.

Many of us will be looking forward to supporting England at the weekend and watching the matches with our friends.

But we need fans to remember a few things so that everyone can enjoy the Euro safely.

With Covid restrictions still in place, people are being asked to respect the measurements put in place by pubs and bars.

Additional officers will be out and about across Staffordshire, particularly during England games, to ensure everyone enjoys the games safely.

Fans are also being reminded to plan ahead if they intend on having a drink by leaving their car keys at home and booking themselves a taxi instead of driving.

Smishing Awareness

Staffordshire police are advising everyone to be vigilant of fake text messages, also known as 'Smishing'. There has been a significant rise seen in the last couple of months of texts purporting to be from banks and delivery companies.

These fraudulent text messages typically contain a link, which if clicked will take a person to a
website which looks quite genuine, but it won't be. They usually come showing a mobile phone number and not the name of a company or business, but this is not always the case !

The purpose of these messages is to capture personal and financial details in order to scam an individual for money and/or conduct other
fraudulent activity against a person.

It always pays to 'Take Five' if you are in receipt of a text message like this, ask yourself what is
being asked 'of' or 'from' you. Always check a request using a safe source, contact the organisation
directly and never respond to messages like these.

We are currently reviewing the Select Bus Services 877/878 route which operates in your Parish as its period of contract is due to end at the beginning of September 2021. Please be assured that this is not a cost-cutting exercise but a normal part of the procurement process to ensure that Staffordshire County Council supported bus services offer the best value for money for Staffordshire residents.

We would welcome any views about the service before we send out the tender.

Please send any comments to my email address below by 18th June 2021.

Averil Cotteril

I was very saddened to hear of the death of Averil, she was a valued member of the church flower rota with the help of Barbara she decorated the church porch with beautiful flower arrangements and accessories that were admired by many. She was a lovely lady willing to help anyone and will be sadly missed in the village.

Averil's Funeral Correction

Yesterday I sent out an E-mail about the recent departure of Averil Cotteril. Unfortunately the details I was given for the funeral was incorrect.

The funeral is on Monday 14th June at 11 am at Stafford Crematorium and not at St Giles Church. The service is family only but the cortege will travel round the village before going to the crematorium.

Her sister Susan recalls that Averil would have found this misunderstanding amusing. She always used to say that Susan wouldn’t even get the date of my funeral correct.
In this case she was actually right.

Over 5M Suspicious Emails Reported

Phishing remains the most successful attack vector for cyber criminals targeting individuals and businesses.

Cyber criminals love phishing. Unfortunately, this is not a harmless riverbank pursuit. When criminals go phishing, you are the fish and the bait is usually contained in a scam email or text message. The criminal's goal is to convince you to click on the links within their scam email or text message, or to give away sensitive information (such as bank details). These messages may look like the real thing but are malicious. Once clicked, you may be sent to a dodgy website which could download viruses onto your computer, or steal your passwords.

As of 30 April 2021, over 5.8 million emails were reported to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS). The tool, which was launched by the National Cyber Security Centre (NCSC) and the City of London Police last April, allows the public to forward suspicious emails to an automated system that scans it for malicious links. Since its launch, over 43,000 scams and 84,000 malicious websites have been removed.

What are the most common phishing scams?

The most commonly spoofed organisation reported in phishing emails was TV Licensing, with victims of these emails reporting losses totalling £5.3m. The majority of losses occurred as a result of victims following malicious links in the emails and inputting their personal information into what they thought was the legitimate TV Licensing website. Shortly after, they would receive a call from criminals impersonating bank staff who was able to convince them that their bank accounts were compromised and persuaded them to transfer all of their money to a new 'safe' account. Some of the other most commonly impersonated organisations included HMRC and DVLA. We also received more than 40,000 suspicious email reports relating to COVID-19.

How you can protect yourself from phishing messages.

Fake emails and text messages can sometimes be difficult to spot and criminals are constantly getting better at finding ways to make them seem more authentic. Email address spoofing, for example, is just one of the tactics criminals will use to try and make their fake emails look real. Here are some tips you should follow to protect yourself, and others, from scam emails and text messages:

1: Be cautious of messages asking for your personal information. Official organisations, such as your bank, should never ask you for personal or financial information via email or text message. If you receive a message and you want to check that it's legitimate, you can call the organisation directly using a known number, such as the one on a bank statement or utility bill.

2: Report suspicious emails. If you receive an email you're not quite sure about, you should report it to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS) by forwarding the email to: report@phishing.gov.uk. Your reports will help government and law enforcement agencies to remove malicious emails and websites.

3: Report suspicious text messages. If you receive a suspicious text message, you can report it by forwarding the message to 7726. It's free of charge and enables your mobile network provider to investigate the origin of the text and take action, if found to be malicious.

4: Report fraud. If you've lost money or provided personal information as a result of a phishing scam, notify your bank immediately and report it to Action Fraud.

Averil Cotterill

It is with great sadness to report that Averil Cotterill BEM passed away last Sunday.  Averil was a staunch supporter of BKV, looking after the flower beds near the village hall and providing refreshments for our annual celebration and prize giving events. She was also active in many other groups and societies within the village. There will be a great hole left in village life.

The funeral will be a family affair on Tuesday 15th June at 10:30 at St Giles church, it will be preceded by a drive past around the village centre.

It is hoped that there will be a memorial event when lock down rules are removed and things get back to normal.
