Haughton Gardening Guild

As Speaker Secretary for the Garden Guild and after consultation with our
President, it has been decided to cancel all future speakers for this year
in view of the current social restrictions. Where possible I am rebooking
those speakers for next year. Janet Harris and myself have had a mini plant
sale from our driveways to raise some funds for Guild and the amount is
rising albeit slowly. Obviously the trip has also been cancelled for this
year. Do keep safe everyone, any queries please call me

Some thoughts on home worship for EASTER 4
(This week we are trying something new! With the help of Trevor and Utube we are
hoping to include some hymns – so turn the sound on!)

Alleluia. Christ is risen.
He is risen indeed. Alleluia
Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ

We are still in the post Easter period, the great forty days, until the Ascension Day,
when we celebrate the after the resurrection appearances of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Hymn: Loving shepherd of thy sheep

Read the Acts of the Apostles Chapter 2 verses 42 to 47
Then read Psalm 23

Then pray the Collect of the day
Merciful Father, you gave your Son Jesus Christ to be the good shepherd,
and in his love for us to lay down his life and rise again.
Keep us always under his protection, and give us grace to follow in his steps;
through Jesus Christ our Lord.    Amen.

Read the Gospel for the day from St John Chapter 10 verses 1 to 10

Pray the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever.  Amen.

Add a few short prayers
Pray especially for Mark and Julie Elton and those caring for Mark in the
ICU at the Royal Stoke hospital.
Pray for any others known to you who are ill or very vulnerable,
especially any in Care homes.
Pray for Cath. Brumfit who is to be our new Rector. She is at present a
curate at Wheaton Aston.

Offer any prayers of your own.

Pray this prayer
Keep us, good Lord under the shadow of your mercy in this time of uncertainty.
Sustain and support the anxious and the fearful, and lift up all who are brought low;
that  we may rejoice in your comfort knowing that nothing can separate
us from your love.
In Jesus Christ our Lord.  Amen

The peace of the Lord be always with you and the blessing the our
Lord Jesus Christ be with you and those you love, this day and always

Haughton - BKV Update

Well we are all tied down now hoping for things to get better, I hope everyone is safe and well. Obviously very little can be done at present but nature keeps on growing and life must continue. See attached some pictures from Peter Lawrence so when you go for your daily one hour exercise you can see how pretty the flower beds are.

The Community Foundation for Staffordshire sent out the following statement following the cancellation of BKV 2020. I think some of you may be interested in taking part.

If you are spending time in your own garden and would like to showcase your work or, if you have children/grandchildren who would like to create a poster, please send them to bkvc@staffsfoundation.org.uk  and we will share them on our social media throughout the spring and summer months.

Just before these troubles it was decided that we would grow our own plants for the village this year and promptly ordered a load of plants for the village beds. These are now growing well, see the attached picture. There are around 500 coming on.

We will try and do litter picks and garden competitions if and when we think it can be done safely. Until the lockdown ends we can do nothing other than growing on the plants.  Please keep safe, continue to support the NHS and all the other essential workers. For those of you with gardens I bet they are the best they have ever been.

Golden Syrup Cake

Hi Trevor,

I have made a golden syrup cake today which was delicious. Below is the recipe and a picture of the results.
I have written a little article to accompany it:

Hi all, if you're looking for an easy cake to make during lockdown Golden Syrup cake is just the thing.
I found this recipe on BBC Good food Guide and made it today. It is delicious!
One little tip - the recipe below recommends a tray bake but I made two tin loaves out of the same ingredients, therefore you could halve the ingredients and make one tin loaf.
For the full quantity I needed an extra ten minutes baking time to that recommended.
Results were great - can be eaten as cake or warm with ice cream as a dessert.
Happy baking!
Suzanne Potts

Ingredients

  • 225g Butter
  • 225g Sugar (light muscovado adds depth but caster is fine)
  • 450g Golden Syrup
  • 450g Self Raising Flour
  • 2 Large Eggs
  • 300 ml milk (whole or semi-skimmed)
  • 4 tbsp Golden Syrup
  • 30cm x 23cm x 4cm baking tin or foil tray bake

Method

    1. Preheat the oven to 140C/fan (or 160/C - gas mark 3). Grease the tin and line the base with baking paper leaving a little to cover the bottom corners and sides. Press into place.
    2. Place butter, syrup and sugar into a large pan and heat gently until the ingredients are just melted together, stirring occassionally. Leave to cool for 10 minutes (it helps if you place the pan away from the hob during this time since it will remain warm).
    3. Beat the eggs with the milk. Add the flour and milk/egg mixture to the cooled syrup mixture in the pan and beat steadily with a wooden spoon until all the lumps have gone. This may take a few minutes so you will need a little patience. Pour the mixture into the tin.
    4. Bake for around 50 minutes. The cake will be well risen and springy, but still very moist. After a few minutes cooling time, pierce the cake all over with a skewer and spoon the extra golden syrup over the top. Leave to cool completely in the tin.
    5. This cake keeps for a week and only improves with time! A real treat and a cake you will be asked to make again and again.

Haughton VE Day Celebrations

EASTER 2 (often called LOW SUNDAY)

Some thoughts on home worship for EASTER 2
(often called LOW SUNDAY)

That was Easter that was! But
Alleluia. Christ is risen.
He is risen indeed. Alleluia

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ

We have come to the post Easter period, the great forty days,
until the Ascension day, when we celebrate the after the resurrection
appearances of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Read the story of Jesus appearing to his Apostles on the first Easter
night from
St. John Chapter 20 verse 19 to verse 31

Then say the Collect of the day
Lord God our Father, through our Saviour Jesus Christ
you have assured your children of eternal life and in
baptism you have made us one with him.
Deliver us from the death of sin and raise us to new life in your love
in the fellowship of the Holy Spirit by the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

 Say the Lord’s Prayer
Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.
Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.
For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever.  Amen.

Read Psalm 16

Add a few short prayers
Pray especially for Mark and Julie Elton and those caring for Mark
in the ICU at the Royal Stoke hospital.
Pray for any others known to you who are ill or very vulnerable, especially
any in Care homes.

Pray this prayer
God of love and hope, you made the world and care for all creation,
but the world feels strange right now.
The news is full of stories about lockdown.
Some people are worried that they might get ill.
Others are anxious for their family and friends.
Be with them and help them to find peace.
Thank you that even in these anxious times you are with us.
Help us to put our trust in you and keep us safe. Amen.

The peace of the Lord be always with you and the blessing the our
Lord Jesus Christ be with you and those you love, this day and always

Some thoughts on home worship for GOOD FRIDAY

Jesus dies on a cross for all people and for our salvation. A day normally

for processions of witness in our towns and villages, but this year all will be silent, as there was silence for three hours over the place where he died on that momentous day.

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and the Lord Jesus Christ

There is a greenhill far away,                        We may not know, we cannot tell

outside a city wall                                         what pains he had to bear,

where the dear Lord was crucified                but we believe it was for us

and died to save us all                                he hung and suffered there.

He died that we might be forgiven;                There was no other good enough

he died to make us good;                                to pay the price of sin;

that we might go at last to heaven                        he only could unlock the gate

saved by his precious blood                        of heaven and let us in.

O dearly, dearly has he loved

and we must love him too,

and trust in his redeeming blood,

and try his works to do.

Read the story of Good Friday from St. John's gospel

Chapter 18 verse 1 to chapter 19 verse 42!

Then say the Good Friday prayer

Almighty Father, look upon this your family for which

the Lord Jesus Christ was contented to be betrayed

and given up into the hands of sinners

and to suffer death upon the cross, who is alive and glorified

with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

Say the Lord's Prayer

Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be your name,

your kingdom come, your will be done on earth as in heaven.

Give us today our daily bread.

Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us.

Lead us not into temptation but deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and for ever.  Amen.

Add a few short prayers of your own.

May your Spirit give us all a sense of calmness and peace, and the Blessing of the Lord Jesus Christ we with you always.

Now some thoughts for EASTER DAY

A message from the Bishops in the Diocese of Lichfield

We send you warm greetings as we prepare to celebrate an Easter unlike any of have known before. Public worship in our churches is suspended, but our joy in the resurrection is not to be silenced. We believe that on Jesus' cross our God has defeated the forces of death and despair, and he holds us his people in his hand. Wherever we are this Easter, let thoughts of Christian joy be in our hearts.

Thine be the glory,                                        Lo! Jesus meets us,

risen, conquering Son,                                risen from the tomb

endless is the victory                                lovingly he greets us,

thou o'er death hast won;                                scatters fear and gloom.

angels in bright raiment                                Let the Church with gladness

rolled away the stone way                                hymns of triumph sing,

kept the folded grave-clothes                        for her Lord now liveth

where the body lay                                        death has lost its sting.

Read the Easter story from St. John's Gospel

Chapter 20 verses 1 to 18

The meditate on the epistle for the day from Colossians chapter 3 verses 1 to 4

If you have been raised with Christ, seek the things which are above, where Christ is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your minds on things that are above not on things that are on earth, for you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When Christ who is your life is revealed, then you also will be revealed with him in glory.

Begin you prayers with the Easter day prayer

Lord of all life and power, who through the mighty resurrection of your Son

overcame the old order of sin and death to make all things new in him:

grant that we, being dead to sin and alive to you in Jesus Christ,

may reign with him in glory, to whom you and the Holy Spirit

be praise and honour, glory and might now and in all eternity. Amen

Add a few prayers of your own,

Particularly on this Easter Day praying for your own families, friends, and fellow church members.

Pray for all NHS staff and other key workers in this time of trial,

But still thank God for the joys of springtime, for the promise of new life that both Easter and spring herald for us all.

Say the Lord's Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name;

thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,

as we forgive those who trespass against us

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory for ever and ever. Amen

Finish with a prayer from Michael, Bishop of Lichfield

Jesus Christ yesterday and todaythe beginning and the end,

Alpha and Omega, all time belongs to him, and all ages;

to him be glory and power, through every age and for ever. Amen.

Think of world without any flowers

Think of a world without and trees

Think of a sky without any sunshine

Think of the air without and breeze.

We thank you Lord for flowers and trees and sunshine,

We thank you  Lord and praise your holy name.
