Remembering Jenny's Mum

We ring the bells for most occasions.  A full peal consists of 5040 changes (derived from the maximum number of changes on 7 bells) When ringing on 6 bells the maximum numbers of changes is 720 and so we need to ring 7 lot's to achieve our 5040 changes and to make a full peal.

We rang a full Peal at Seighford on Saturday 14th October remembering Jenny Beech's mother who sadly passed away 3 years ago this week at the age of 100

60 Years and counting

I was lucky enough to ring in a Peal to celebrate E Ann Williams' 60th ringing year.  Morton Corbet was the chosen tower as she had been tower captain there while her husband had been vicar.

Ann was persuaded to take up the hobby by her father, who coaxed her along to a practice as they were short of ringers.  She describes herself as being very reluctant to take up the art, but as soon as she grabbed hold of a rope, she was hooked.  60 years later and having rung over 500 peals she is just as keen today as she was then.

It just shows you that you need to have ago at everything in life, you just don't want you'll enjoy.  Please free to call in and see us on a Tuesday evening to have ago, it might just change your life!

We rang 7 methods in the peal, 7 full extents of Cambridge, Kent TB, Oxford TB, St Clements, College Bob, Single Court, and Plain Bob.  It was completed int 2 hrs 40 minutes

St. Giles Church Clock Haughton

I mentioned the church clock in a previous post.  I expect many people go by check the time on it and walk on by.   The clock was reconstructed by WM Leigh of Eccleshall in 1883, and I guess it has been ticking away way before then.  When I first had dealing with it back in the late 1980's it required winding 3 times a week.

After the bells were re-hung in 1998, Phil Michie of Haughton cleaned the clock and re-hung the weighs to get it working again, but as the ceiling had been lowered to accommodate the new bell installation the clock required re-winding every other day.  Shortly after that, in the early 2000's it was decided to electrify the winding of the chimes, this meant the clock weight could be mounted where the chiming weight had been, enabling the clock to run a whole week between winding.

Richard Dyble now winds the clock and has been doing a fantastic job of it for the last 10 years or so.

Our tower isn't that accessible, as access is via an almost vertical steel ladder, so tower tours are not possible, but here are some pictures of the clock.

A big Thank You

Recently I have been working on the Church clock as we've been having problems with it striking.  I've been to the church on numerous occasions, and each time there has been some kind of maintenance activity taking place.

We are so lucky in Haughton to have sure a lovely old building within the Village.  I go ringing at many churches up and down the country and although most are very beautiful and historic, there is something magical and unique coming home to Haughton.

Some parts of our church dates back to the 13th Century and it really does take some looking after keeping it at the standard it is, there are so many unsung heroes within our village who volunteer tirelessly maintaining it's grounds, keeping it clean and tidy, maintained for future generations to come, and not to mention the finances and paperwork that comes with the building.

I'm not going to name anyone as I am bound to miss someone out, but from me and the rest of the Bell Ringers and Village, here is a BIG THANK YOU ALL.
